How Long Does A Whole Home Renovation Take?

Updating your home look is a perfect way to add beauty, comfort and convenience to your house. One of the most popular homeowners questions our renovation team asks though is about timelines. This is often a hard thing to answer, as each project has a unique set of needs that affect the overall completion rate.

But, when determining how long your project should take, it is important to keep in mind some basic guidelines. Here’s what you need to know about the home renovation process and various rule-of-thumb timelines.

Cosmetic Renovations – A Weekend To Three Months

If your home is still relatively new or you don’t need much effort, you may be looking at a basic cosmetic remodel. In most cases, it can take from a weekend to over three months for short renovations requiring only cosmetic repairs. It involves things such as painting the walls, painting the exterior, new countertops, new appliances, or removing the standard flooring. It can even be something as simple as new landscaping or for a more fashionable farmhouse design to change a basic sink.

Essentially, a timeframe for cosmetic upgrades is reserved for minor repairs or in cases where the house ‘s basic bones are still in excellent condition but require a small amount of upgrading. A do-it-yourself can quickly accomplish several of these tasks within a few hours or a few days. Larger tasks like plumbing, or large-scale carpentry work, often involve a licensed contractor, but could still be considered relatively cosmetic.

Medium Renovations – Several Weeks To Six Months

The next timeline approach to completing home renovation is medium renovations which can take up to six months to complete for several weeks. It usually involves cases where you have to come close to decomposing the space entirely or require extra repair work beyond a simple cosmetic repair. That is the group that most of our projects fall under, as a reputable Houston contractor.

Major Overhaul – Six Months To Over One Year

The last type of project to consider in the major overhaul when determining timelines for the renovation. Basically, it would take longer to put it back together if it’s needed to gut the entire house. These types of construction projects frequently take six months to a year or more to complete.

This is, in fact, what many house flippers and rehab owners are searching for when they decide to take on a project. These are the situations in which a home is in a fantastic position but needs a tremendous amount of maintenance work to carry it to modern sensibilities. It is also important to remember that a major renovation may also involve issues on a wide scale such as foundation repair, structural repair, house raising, improvements to the second story and more.

Money, Size, And Weather Are Other Factors To Be Considered

There are also other things to consider when planning a home renovation. Money is the first, and most significant. If you have a small amount of money, you may prolong the time it takes to complete your renovation. Why? For what? Budget overages in complicated renovation projects are popular. If your contractor unexpectedly discovers that you need to invest a few extra thousand dollars on a potentially serious issue — such as an undetected problem with the base or removing troublesome tree roots — you will need a little more time to get the funds, which will then delay completion. In addition, while most contractors try to give as accurate an estimate as possible, even small remodels have the potential to go over.

A home renovation is a huge undertaking that can take anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the size and scope of the project. If you’re thinking about renovating your home, it’s important to do your research and plan ahead so you can manage your expectations and stay within your budget. Are you planning a home renovation?
